About the event

What's the big deal with Carbon Markets and Offsets?

Recent dramatic momentum in carbon markets showcases a carbon-conscious pathway for industries moving forward. The IHS Markit Global Carbon Index returned 108% in 2021 and caught the attention of multiple investors, which is motivating other governments to follow suit with countries like Europe.

The carbon market was a strategy to keep major polluters accountable and incentivise them to lower their emissions. Applying cap-and-trade to carbon began what we know today. However, measurement problems, lack of transparency from businesses, direct versus indirect emissions and lack of punishments for wrongdoing leave gaps for businesses. Top schemes like flight offsetting have come to light as businesses develop strategies for customer involvement. But, many of these have been found ineffective with little climate impact. With little trust for business implementations, what can we do within the carbon market to promote positive change?

Join us for an event to learn about Carbon Markets & Offsets - the good, the bad and the ugly:

  • What is the carbon market?
  • How might we invest in it?
  • What does offsetting carbon mean?
  • What is a carbon credit?
  • How do you measure emissions and the amount being offset from a carbon project?
  • What will environmental markets look like in 2030?
  • Who will be buying and selling the credits?

Our special guest is John Connor, CEO of The Carbon Market Institute, an organisation dedicated to helping businesses seize opportunities in rapidly evolving carbon markets.
